While my original New Year's Eve Mystery quilt languishes on the design wall, a new star was born...heeheehee.

I learned that a quilt that I owed for a charity auction was due...so in 4 days...yep 4 days, these hands cut, sewed, and quilted this little gem.

NYE MSYTERY QUILT

It's been a long week ... Along with other quilters in FabricaholicsAnonymous, I started making these blocks on New Year's Eve and have finally finished (today) the 35 blocks. Now, I'll need to figure out how to make it bigger without making another row of blocks; by adding an inner border and then a 10 1/2 outside border...that may make it large enough. The plan is to free motion the quilt on my berNINA! I will be posting my progress as I finish each stage....maybe I should put these blocks together in sections and quilt them in sections - making it easier for these hands.

This picture shows all but the last six blocks; but shows the blocks with accurate coloration... I used an old lavender fabric as the background and 3 Kaffe Fassett fabrics - red print, blue print, and bright chartreuse with bits of yellow and orange. Had I known that they would show as twinkling jewels, I might have chosen different fabrics. Now isn't the way of the "mystery quilt" ? Of course, I can make another one later on...lol.

Hello there and Happy New Year to all of you. Thanks for reading my blogs; some of you have been readers and followers for a couple years now. I've never had a giveaway...want to do that just to give you loyal readers a special token of my appreciation. Also, I am working on a new blog which will feature all of my crafting and quilting projects in one place. By the end of this month, I hope to have a GIVEAWAY and will switch to the new blog. These blogs will be phased out over this year. Hopefully those who currently follow me, will be interested in the new blog as well. Again thank you. More news will follow regarding the GIVEAWAY at this month's end...lol.

What am I up to right now? Well, I am working on a NYE mystery quilt that has a zillion pieces for a twin sized quilt, which I know will have to be made bigger. What a chore to cut up strips into hundreds of squares. I need a GO CUTTER! too poor to get one of those, so I persevere. At least I have an idea of the look of the block...just last night. I have all the components almost finished; working on the center block of the design. ( more about the MYSTERY QUILT AUTHOR LATER) ...

Temecula Quilts continues a "12 Days of Christmas" mystery blocks; ends January 6. If you've not started, it is a very easy group of blocks...so jump in!

I found myself in Center City last night and the beautiful, brightly lighted Christmas Tree transformed Love Park with its brilliance! The Park has been further transformed by the "Christmas Village" - It was like a smorgasbord of the best handcrafts from around the world. From lovely handcrafted jewelry to beautifully woven fabrics and knotted bracelets...it is truly the place to find that special gift! The smells of yummy hot chocolate along with the lovely voices of young performers permeated the cold night air! Merry Christmas to All - To All a good night!

Hello! This box of Christmas gifts is begging to be ~~ripped apart~~ , I mean opened. C-R-A-F-T yahoo group (the best group of ladies you will find ) held its annual C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S swap. Each of us make and purchase gifts - 9 of them each representing the letters in C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S! My swap mate, Karen Mallory sent her gifts out early (BEFORE THE DEADLINE)....thank you very much Karen. A couple weeks ago, members of CRAFT (yahoo group) who live in New Zealand and Australia went on a retreat. Some of us members in both Australia and the US weren't able to attend. We had a Stay At Home Retreat and chatted via email and sewed and posted pics! Anyhoo, the lovely Naomi (Aussie) set up games; I won this cute little notebook and ink pen cover and a yummy CHERRY RIPE bar! Where can I get more of this delicious candy? Gosh that's good!!! Yesterday was a REAL snow day; comparable to our winter snows? Nah, it was just a little snowstorm or was it? Some 300,000 people were without power here in Pennsylvania and if you are one of those folks, this was no mere snow shower. I can tell you that after driving some 40 years and often time in the worst of snow storms, yesterday I had the worst driving experience ever! I had to drive on the turnpike to take dd back to college. What a disaster! What about snow and ice on the road don't folks understand? There was standing water and because the temperature of the road was warm, the ice and snow mixture was a total mess. Most of us were driving about 35 mph. An SUV (driven by a total idiot) traveling much faster felt the need to get between me and the vehicle in front of me and in doing so slossed up a virtual WALL of slush that covered my windshield for at least a couple minutes. I was driving blind and the only thing that kept me from crashing into the WALL BARRIER was that the right shoulder has a rough edge to the road so that a driver knows he/she is about to drive off the lane into the shoulder area. There wasn't any shoulder, but I used that ridge (keeping the right tires along that bumpy edge) to guide me as I continued to drive. Of course I took my foot off the accelerator! But that scared the crap out of me for sure. It really shook me up... Oh well, I made it with the Grace of God!
So here are some pictures of the road that dd took as we spent two hours getting to her school - normally it takes about 30 to 40 minutes to get there.

It isn't winter yet!!!!! whiny voice!!! lol...

Trees still have foliage and haven't really changed color fully...they snapped and were down all over the area because of the heavy snow and high winds!

WHAT'S MY NAME?

Dawn of "As Sweet As Cinnamon" ... IS just the sweetest, nicest blogger I know (and I know quite a few really sweet people, lol) wants to know how I came to name my blog "VERSANA" . ~~Long story~~ , okay, the short story is that I'm a zany, crazy kind of gal. Raising three children and a husband, passionately sewing, creating and oh yeah, collecting fabric AND working the streets of the big city everyday for some twenty years as a street cop makes you a little wild and crazy...just a little. So when I was searching my brain for just the right name for a blog, the word crazy (in a fun kind of way) was foremost in my thoughts. But, I can't be just an ordinary crazy so I asked my kids what one word (or maybe a couple) came to their minds when they thought of me. Take my advice, never ask your kids a question like that! lol... My oldest, a Latin scholar quickly diffused the situation by suggesting "Versana" ... I hurried to look it up, cuz she just wouldn't tell me what it meant. It means "WILD" like a whirlwind! You know...that IS what my household and life has been (my poor children), so Versana it is! Cuzzzz, I AM WILD AND CRAZY !!! just ask my kids...grin!
So there, you have it (long story...lol) . Go on...tell us what your name is ... Here

2012 will bring big changes. Our current (and biggest) project? A new website! It is our hope that it will be up and running by the First of the New Year. It will bring together the content of all of my blogs -- because links to the other blogs are nice, but one stop is better, right? The site already has a design and layout planned, so it's coming along.

In the meantime, I will be having an "End-of-the-Year" giveaway! Photos and details to come soon.

MATCHBOX SWAP

Pictured above is a goody bag which is Kathie's response to our wonderful hostess KAI's MATCHBOX SWAP! KAI hosted not just 1 swap, not just 2 swaps, but 3 swaps this past month!!! Of course, I was ~~forced, I mean compelled~~, I really mean participated in of my own free will! Oh, who am I kidding, I am totally addicted to swaps. More on the package I sent her. You see, I thought this was such an easy thing to do, gather a few mementos and put them in a little matchbox. You know, a little something that would compel a person to want to fly a plane, ride the train, drive a car, or sail a boat to vacation in your area. For me that turned out to be a ... well more on that later.
Back to Kathie who can write...she wrote out a wonderful vacation brochure describing all the lovely attractions her area holds. I admit to being late in posting my matchbox to her and by the time I had read and reread her brochure, it was taking all I had not to get in my car and simply drive to NY and deliver her swap in person. So tempting...Ughhhhhh!

Every Friday night in New Hope, there is a HUGE firework display. I must say they are some of the best I've seen. Unfortunately, with a new smart phone....Um, this is the best picture so far. Hopefully DH has more and better pictures. We were on the New Jersey side and filming through a tree. There were so many people there; apparently it is a very popular event. Oh, they happen EVERY Friday night during the summer!

These wonderful clouds floated by all day over New Hope, PA. The day was hot, but not humid and Hubby, Junior and I took full advantage of the wonderful day by walking along the strip of wonderful Main Street shops. We lunched at Havana; very scrumptious food. We took lots of pictures of the Delaware River....

The area has great wildflowers everywhere. There is a wildflower farm nearby and as time goes on, we will explore the surrounding area more.

I'm not going to yak here...just show you some more pictures of the Vermont Quilt Show!

This quilt has to be seen in person...it is freaking AWESOME!

Aren't these quilts beautiful, the double sided quilt at the bottom was just so awesome. Of course these are just a very small number of the pictures I took as there were just so many beautiful quilts. So much talent!!! Hope you enjoy this small group of quilts as much as I did.

A cruise on The Spirit of Ethan Allen III....

Dinner was a lovely boat ride on The Spirit of Ethan Allen III for a 2/1/2 hour dinner cruise around Lake Champlain. At one point it rained so hard that we couldn't see the ocean out the windows. Oh yes! We had a window seat... but Mother Nature rewarded us later with the most beautiful SUNSET ever!

YES! I have been missing in action...lol, from my blogging in any case. This is a little bit of what I've been up to . A couple weeks ago, DH said come on, let's leave the kids behind (all grown) and take a little trip. Where, I asked. To Vermont! VERMONT????? Well, I packed and off we went. What made me just go along with his program...he mentioned the Vermont Quilt Festival. That man knows just how to make me move....and FAST! Anyhoo, it was a long seven hour drive through some of the most beautiful area I've ever seen. We went to Burlington...which is a small city on Lake Champlain. What an AWESOME, BEAUTIFUL landscape...my mouth is still open in amazement at the beauty of this area!!!

Okay, okay...we arrived in Vermont around 830 am and headed right to the quilt festival. YES! There were awesome beautiful antique quilts....gorgeous landscape quilts...what better place to make a landscape quilt...right!

This quilt sorta spoke to me...love the hearts that really looked like shamrocks to me! The quilting was just lovely. It is the Double Irish Chain pattern and on the embroidered on the back "Edward Anthony McBirney, SJ, Rutland, Vt, Feb. 5, 1967. Reported to have been made for Father McBirney by his mother. Donated by Gabriel Walden, 1967. * Vermont Quilt Festival, Patterns of History*

Combination Crazy Quilt with Kate Greenway patterns...made by Cynthia Morse Hobbs King of Marshfield, VT about 1890. Featured n Plain and Fancy: Vermont's People and Their Quilts. Museum purchase 2004

Silk crazy quilt. Made about 1881in honor of J.D. Wickham who served as headmaster at the Burr and Burton Seminary in Manchester, VT. Donated by Marjorie Schuffler 1975

All cotton quilt made in a crazy quilt variation. Philea A. Spear of Waitsfield crafted this quilt in 1909 when she was 84 years old. She recorded that there are 12,976 pieces of material... This is my most favorite...it has to be seen in person in order to really get the full effect of this gorgeous quilt!!!

In fact it started a couple weeks ago while shopping for a suit for darling son's junior prom. We ended up renting a black, pin-striped suit and neither of us liked the flimsy red vest and ties, sooooo here he is modeling an almost finished red vest made from my favorite of fabrics - SILK DUPIONI ... tie by moi - red shantung silk ... vest - red silk dupioni with red shantung silk covered buttons!

A couple days ago, I took a bus trip with a great art teacher and other art students from my girls' alma mater to New York City to visit the William Bennett Gallery and the Museum Of Modern Art.

It was an exhausting journey, but one filled with the joy of having some one on one time with my 22 year old daughter. She went away to college five years ago and while she did receive her college degree, she came home exhausted. This past year has been very stressful and difficult adjustment for her. There were times that I thought I had lost her forever. She and I were so close until she went away to college. I told her how much I admire and love her.

Do you have a favorite place to buy your fabric? art supplies? Over the years I've had favorite places to shop for my dressmaking fabrics and this year I headed right to the place for some silk swatches. The stores that once boast some wonderfully beautiful fabrics of silks and other fine dress fabrics are a thing of the past. I was shocked to find the stores filled with what looked like a basement explosion of some type. Gone are the quality dress fabrics. Not in just one store, but all the stores are filled with less than the best quality fabrics. It is so disappointing ... I'm having a really hard time adjusting to this reality.

Well, fortunately my favorite FABRIC shop and YARN shop were still there and still have wonderful, beautiful, and funky modern fabrics and yarns...

The snow storm started Wednesday morning and ended sometime during the wee hours of Thursday morning left us with about 15 inches of new snow!!!! This reminded me of the way it used to be about 20 years ago when we had our first snows in October and it didn't stop snowing until March... Lol, folks were talking about this being "snowmedgedon" sooooo funny. We have become complacent ... it IS winter and snow is to be expected. My ds is happy - no school today.

Hubby, along with son and daughter went out to clear the snow off the cars and shovel out some of the snow around the cars. Of course I had to go out to supervise...hehhehheh.... I took some pictures of them working and playing. Dd and Dh had a snow bucket fight! lol....we had fun and now need naps!

Loss of lives and property have devastated two continents in the past week. As a member of C-R-A-F-T, a yahoo group whose owner, Khristina, is Australian and whose membership is greatly made up of ladies living in Australia and New Zealand, I've had access to various videos and stories of peoples affected by the floods there. Most of these stories have been provided by members of our group. I feel so helpless here in the US; however, there is a way that I and anyone reading this can help our sisters and brothers in Australia. There are many groups and bloggers setting up information and other modes of raising money, quilts, collections for clothing and gathering volunteers for the clean up.

Retromummy is one such bloggers. I will set up a button on the side bar also!

This is outside our door! It is so appropriate that such opposites exist in the world. Thank you, my friends who responded to my cry for help. You all have busy lives;; however, you managed to leave words of encouragement and strength. Thank you very much! I know most of us prefer to read about the sunny aspect of life.

Also in this post I would ask that anyone reading this moment to please say prayers for our brothers and sisters in flood ravaged Queensland, NSW, and Brazil. Many lives have been lost. Pray for people all over our Earth who are without loved ones; are sick and healing, and for the dying.

A couple days ago, "Dot", the original "Dotee" doll artist left a message that she has closed her blog. In fact I read and viewed the last beautifully pictured art of her blog; at the end of these entries, this wonderful artist abruptly stated an end to her blog and BAM! gone! I am bereath and inconsolable, Dot. Your art was just so beautiful to view and I'm sorry that I didn't always say so. That's the thing about living, sometimes you don't know how much you'll miss someone, until they leave. Okay Dot...I am just trying to say it here on my blog (cuz I can't locate your email addy) how much I appreciate you sharing a big chunk of yourself and life. You are beautiful and so is your art! Thank you for the many blessings...thanks for the cruelty of my parents; they made me strive to be a more loving, more giving, more patient, more caring, more understanding. Thanks for teachers and ministers who told me that I was not and could not be a special person; I learned to love myself and learned to love others. Thanks to those who did not support me when I was beaten and homeless; God sent others who became my family and they helped feed me and clothe me. From them, I learned the true definition of "family. Thanks for a job where supervisors and co-workers denigrated and harassed me; I went out into the public and treated each person fairly, even when the person(s) displayed his/her worst behavior. From all the not so nice experiences with family and others, I continue to learn to love, forgive and grow in spirit as I reach out to them that hurt me and to those I don't know.

The problems of the world are many, too many to name. They are as many as there are people... I pray that we who can, remember to pass along and share with loved ones and strangers alike, the blessings of God's grace, for by the grace of God, there goes I.

Thanks to my family who love and support me...I love you. Thanks to my C-R-A-F-T friends for listening and all the advice, stories, and good will you have extended me. I have been lifted by your friendship. My life is full and happy for I realize that everything that happens is a lesson, a teaching tool...designed for me to grow or designed for me to help another grow. My cup runneth over...

HAPPY 55th BIRTHDAY!

Saturday was a wonderful day for celebrating a birthday... Hey, what would I say if it was a cold and rainy day? We'll have to wait for that day! The sun was shining and it was lovely warmish Autumn day. Perfect! Darling hubby drove us to college town to pick up college daughter and our bestest friend in the world joined us for a meal. We've never been to PLATE, a lovely restaurant in Ardmore; the food was AWESOME DELICIOUS and served by a DELICIOUS WAITER! I had the Asian salad...you simply must try it - mmmmmmm, so yummeeeeeee!!! lol...

We all had a wonderful time....back at the college, we partied and opened my gifts!!!! Sorry no pics! Thanks to my family and friends at C-R-A-F-T, my birthday was a wonderful celebration!!!

WHILE THAT WAS GOING ON HERE...IN THE LAND DOWN UNDER history was being made!!! Members of C-R-A-F-T, an online group, owned by the lovely Khristina were keeping vigil and waiting to hear the news...

-- A few months ago,the ladies in the group worked on heart blocks, mailed them to SharonNZ where she fashioned them into a quilt that sprang directly from her imagination!!! She designed, sewed, and quilted a marvelous quilt. Here, stateside, I made a quilty bag using fabrics from the Frolic line by Moda (fabrics also used in the quilt) and mailed it off to SharonNZ.

Let me tell you about Khris...lovely, compassionate, and caring. She's the greatest LIST MOM ever!!! I've been in quite a few groups and this is the most special group of ladies I've chanced to meet. Khris does run a tight "ship" ... we are strongly encouraged to participate...say hello - make some noise!!!! We do and we get to know one another and really care about what happens to each other. Khris does so much in the group and out of it. She is hostess to the famous F-R-I-E-N-D-S swap and if someone falls short in any of her swaps, she generously steps in and make it right. She designs patterns and very generously shares them, encouraging us all to participate. We have sew-ins where those who can, hook up through webcams and sew all day or or the weekend. All the member of C-R-A-F-T are very talented!

Christmas 2008, I met this lovely lady in person as she traveled (with her husband) to the US... She is a very warm and caring person with a great sense of humor!!!

For the past three months, I've slowly made handbags for my son's high school craft show, held this weekend. For all the time I worked, only 15 purses made it to the show and a 16th one as a gift bag. It is a wonder to me that crafters pack up and unload and pack up and unload...what an exhausting experience!!!! Here is a picture of my table taken today.

Eleven purses came back home with me in the end; however the ones sold did pay for the space. Is that good? My purses were priced very low and still they weren't the flavor of the weekend. I took time out to view other crafters's purses (there were two)...yep, those prices were higher, but the vendors are known to the crowd.

Anyhoo, I'm very happy because I won a quilt!!!! a beautiful queen size quilt ! ! ! ! !
Pictures after I sleep! Exausted but happy!!! I even danced on the stage when they called my name and said that I had won the quilt. The quilt made by Arlett (known to me) is well made ... the woman is meticulous and her work is impeccable! S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G! ! !

This is the beautiful celing above the altar in the newly rebuilt chapel at my son's high school. A year ago, the chapel was seriously damaged by fire; now and in time for the school's 50th Anniversary, the damage is repaired and all but three of its really beautiful stained glass windows have been replaced. This morning the chapel was the scene of my son's Junior Ring Mass. It was a beautiful and moving ceremony...

Autumn is here! The temperatures are cooler...love it! Some the trees are showing off their gold and red hues. It is my most favorite time of year.
Yesterday we took dd back to her campus, which is full of wonderful, beautiful trees. I love it! As we were leaving, I took this picture from inside the car. What a lovely sight, eh!

WHOOHOOOOO!!! This is the first time in the past seven years that I've been able to attend the PA quilt convention. To celebrate a number of things, this little item hopped into my car with me!!! That's right, just hopped right in! lol!!!! What a different machine. My other machine is a Brother 2001 ULT.
This lovely has the largest embroidery hoop and the greatest capacity to do continuous embroidery; not to mention that free motion embroidery foot! This also has a quilting frame (purchased separately, OF COURSE) lol... especially made for this machine! WOW! Thanking God for yet another blessing, while I figure out how to operate this baby!

Oh, I feel a contest coming on....this baby needs a name!!!

It's early Sunday morning and the son has to participate in the "Red Mass" celebration of his school's homecoming weekend. I've always said that rainy days are "GOOD DAYS FOR DUCKS". Actually in this instance, it's canadian geese. As we drove onto the school campus, we noticed a large amount of geese on the grounds... they are so cute. It is interesting how they walk in the street and as soon as they hear vehicles, they immediately head for the grassy areas. It took a couple drives around the driveway to take a couple pictures and the third time I caused them to move off the street, they began to protest loudly!!! lol....just like some humans I know! Thank you Lord for this beautiful rainy day!

String Quilt .... quilt as you go...sew along with my online friends has come to a halt. There isn't enough fabric for binding the rows! Anyhoo, this is a very easy way to finish a quilt with the quickness! I really enjoyed it so far. Guess this calls for a FABRIC run...lol! It was lovely to talk and sew with other members of our group as we chatted via the webcam and such. I can hardly wrap my head around the technology available to us today! Khristina in her lovely "owl" PJs - all the way from Australia; Sharon in New Zealand; Kath across the US as well as Wilma out west! Oh, let's not forget Dianne, right here in my city...lol! AUGUST CHALLENGE

Amanda is hosting a 6 month long Christmas challenge on her blog! June was ornaments, July was a table runner and this month is a center piece for the table! Here are a couple pictures of my submission. LOL! The first attempt at making this thingy was a complete FAILURE!!!! The poor thing melted. You see, I removed the wrappers, HOT glued the peppermints onto the styroform cone and the more I worked, the MORE sticky the peppermints became. YIKES! didn't have enough for the size cone. Well, while waiting to purchase more peppermints, it occurred to me that I should do something so that every insect in the kingdom doesn't land on this thing. Mod Podge... NOT a good idea... I applied liberal amounts and boy what a mess...the candy melted after a couple hours and even over night, the tree turned into a dripping MONSTER of a MESS!!!! So the second try...did not remove the wrappings.... phewwwww!

Two days ago, I heard a very loud knock at the front door...who in the world could that be? The postman with a box for me! A lovely rain proof bag (with its own carrier) that I can take to the Quilt convention and stuff full of fabulous fabrics!!!!

BABY GIRL GRADUATES!

...my baby girl graduated from high school...with honors...this National Honor Student is college bound!!! HOORAY! HOORAY! HOORAY! It has indeed been an exhausting three weeks here in this household as our two daughters graduated, one from college and now our youngest daughter from high school. On April 15, our baby girl was amongst the thousands of deserving students who received those NASTY emails telling them that the colleges of their choice had no room for them in their academic programs. Baby girl was devastated...crushed and inconsolable! However, God does have a way of putting us where we need to be...with help from very special ladies, baby girl will attend a very good college in the fall! Thank you very much (YOU KNOW who you are). CONGRATULATIONS my baby! WE are so so PROUD of you!!!

The front is secured with a large button.

Khris also included a pattern for a simple to make flower.

Whewwww! While I was piecing gowns, March and April flew by! It was a great sense of accomplishment to actually finish the dresses. As in the past five years, I was working on my daughter's gown as her very patient date AND his parents sat and waited. These hands of mind definitely require more time....lots more time! LOL! As Shakespeare says, "Alls well that ends well"....or something like that! Pictures posted along the sidebar of the blog!

I've got lots of updates to do and will get them done by weeks end. I won a prize from SewCalGal! Thanks Darlene! Got some wonderful fabrics from hancocks-paducah.com, lovely Fasset and Laura Gunn prints from Spool - just have to stop and say what a wonderful store this is. If you get the chance, it is a store you simply must visit! Also got some lovely yarns from Loop - right next door to Spool! Thanks Laura for your assistance!
